Cristela’s dream of becoming a lawyer is something her traditional Mexican-American family doesn't quite understand. She’s entering her sixth year of law school after juggling home obligations and working multiple jobs to pay her way.
Cristela lives in cramped quarters with her sister Daniela, her long-suffering brother-in-law Felix and their two young kids. The senior member of this extended family, all living under one roof in Dallas, is Cristela’s old school mom, Natalia, who tells her “somebody could have been a doctor two times in the time it’s taken you not to become a lawyer.” Daniela loves her sister but balks when she tries to bring her modern views into family life. Felix resents how Cristela pays no rent and worst of all, always drinks his last beer. After six years of setbacks, her mom Natalia worries that becoming a lawyer might not be in the cards for her and doesn't want Cristela to be hurt by a dream that might not come true.

S1E20 - Last Goose Standing
Tim Allen, who stars as Mike Baxter on the hit series "Last Man Standing," guest stars in a crossover: Mike seeks legal help when he wants to expand his Outdoor Man Store's gun range in Dallas. But Trent already greased every palm in town to build the original, so Cristela is tasked with gaining the favor of the zoning commissioner. This puts her in an awkward position since she isn't fond of guns. The upside? -- she gets to work with Ben Buckner, a handsome associate who may be just her type.

S1E21 - Village Mode
Cristela, Josh & Maddie are hours away from taking the bar exam and everyone is handling the stress a little differently. Cristela is feeling confident about the test, until Daniela loses her job. It's a family crisis when Natalia goes into "Village Mode" -- which is similar to survival mode, demanding that Cristela put off the test and get a job at the local hair salon. Will Cristela pass up the opportunity to advance her own career just to help put her family at ease?

S1E22 - Movin' on Up
Cristela, Maddie and Josh eagerly await the results of the bar exam. Much to everyone's surprise, Maddie passes while Josh does not. Cristela also passes the exam and Trent offers her an attorney position at his law firm that comes along with an added perk of hiring an assistant. Faced with moving back in with his parents, Josh eagerly accepts the assistant gig. An ecstatic Cristela returns home to celebrate, but is lovingly confronted by Daniela who wants Cristela to move out and start living the life of a single girl, the life she deserves.
