Darna

“Darna” is a female superhero or superheroine in the Philippines and is the name of a famous comic book here for many years there. Comics are pronounced “Komiks” in the Philippines. Her costume very closely resembles that of the beautiful superheroine “Wonder Woman” of comics and TV. “Darna” first appeared as “Varga” on 23 July 1947 in “Bulaklak” magazine volume #4, issue #17. The creator of the superheroine “Mars Revelo” had differences with the editors of the magazine and decided to change her name and relaunch on 13 May 1950. Some of her special abilities or powers include flying, super strength, super speed, telekinesis, telepathy and almost total invincibility. The relaunched 1950’s version of “Darna” indicates that she was a regular farm girl who finds a small white stone fragment from a meteor rock. She for some reason swallows the stone and then yells “Darna” and turning into the mighty superheroine ready to save the earth. The series has also been known as "Mars Ravelo's Darna".
