Evacuation tells the untold, inside story of the British military campaign to evacuate Kabul airport in 2021, through raw, intimate, never-heard-before testimony from the British servicemen and women who found themselves at the epicentre of an unfolding crisis as the Taliban closed in.This series goes beyond the headlines and parliamentary debates of the time, focusing instead on the personal stories of the British servicemen and women who found themselves dealing with a humanitarian crisis on a scale they'd never experienced before. Some 15,000 British nationals and eligible Afghans were flown out in a matter of days, but the human dilemmas on the ground for the armed forces sent to extract them play out like drama in this gripping series.
In the first episode, a small British military team is sent out to prepare for a possible evacuation, but nobody knows quite what to expect. Suddenly, the Taliban shock the world by taking Kabul. The military scramble to clear the airfield of thousands of panicked civilians. Can they regain control and start the evacuation?
British soldiers come face to face with the enemy when Taliban fighters breach the airfield. But with the Taliban now in control of the country, they're forced to put old hostilities aside as they work together to control the crowds. Young soldiers must make life-and-death decisions on who is eligible for evacuation, while in the air, one pilot narrowly avoids a catastrophic collision - while the RAF must decide whether to overload aircraft to take more evacuees.
When a deadly explosion goes off in the sewage canal outside the evacuee handling centre, British soldiers rush to search for anyone who can be saved. Working through the night with medics, they save and treat thousands of injured Afghans and American Marines and as they pull back from the Baron Hotel, they close the gate on hundreds of vulnerable civilians. Ultimately, the 20-year war comes to a tragic and unsatisfying end as the RAF turn to airlifting their own forces out of the country.
