Maxine 'Max' Chandler is a fading American screen actress who, with her pet poodle Ralphie, has taken up residence in a suite at the Savoy Hotel while she's appearing on the London stage and in BBC radio plays, and writing her autobiography. Although her best days are behind her, Max remains - in her illmannered comportment - every inch the tempestuous big shot, an egotistic, boorish, narcissistic, self-centred multi-divorcee.
