The Royle Family's dad and son Ricky Tomlinson and Ralf Little reunite years after they last got together, for a heart-warming and hilarious staycation, travelling the length and breadth of northern England, in a quest to unlock each of its region's own unique secrets.From the banks of the urban Mersey to the beauty of the Lakes, from the steel works of Sheffield to the chocolate makers of York, and on to curry houses, football clubs, steam trains – and the Angel of the North, it's a fascinating route rich in natural beauty, culture, cuisine, sport – and, of course, humour…They meet some old friends from the world of showbiz – and make new ones at every port of call – as they explore what makes the people in this part of Britain so special. They also reflect on how life has changed them as individuals – and the North itself – over the 20-odd years since they first met.
Royle Family dad and son Ricky Tomlinson and Ralf Little reunite for a heartwarming staycation exploring the sights and sounds of the north of England. Setting out from Ricky's home city of Liverpool, they embark on the first leg of the trip, heading to some Lancashire hotspots.
Royle Family co-stars Ralph Little and Ricky Tomlinson explore the beauty of Cumbria on their quest to unearth the spirit of the north of England, with mint cake in Kendal, boating on Lake Windermere and a bet at Carlisle races.
Ricky and Ralf hit Yorkshire in their quest to find the true North, with a boxing session in Leeds, chocolate in York, curry in Bradford and 'Dracula town' Whitby on Halloween.
The Royle campervan hits the North-East, to experience the Angel of the North, a working coal mine and glass blowing – and meet local pigeon-racers, food bank heroes – and a soccer legend.
The duo hit South Yorkshire to join a top brass band, visit a cave surely named for Ricky (The Devil's Arse), eat high-end Yorkshire Pudding, and busk with unique local hero John Shuttleworth.
It's the final leg of the duo's tour – and a homecoming. Ralf tries to conquer a childhood food fear at Bury Market – while Ricky brings his TV son to some favourite haunts in Liverpool.
