From infancy, our culture teaches what it means to be a boy or a girl. From the colour of our clothes to the advertisements we see, we are influenced by a barrage of messages telling us who we should be in order to conform to our gender. Are these media representations reflections of how we actually are? Or are they exaggerations presented in order to preserve a rigid set of values that stress the differences between the sexes?
"Sex Wars" is a one-hour documentary special, which looks at the reasons why sexual stereotypes in media prevail, even as society seemingly becomes more egalitarian. It also examines the effects sexual stereotypes have on our relationships with each other. Featuring prominent media theorists and writers, including Thomas DeZengotita, Douglas Rushkoff, Jessica Benjamin and Camille Paglia, "Sex Wars" examines the paradoxical relationship between media and sexual identity.
