S1E4 - M1 Plane Crash

It's 8:23 at night in January 1989 and a routine commuter flight from Heathrow to Belfast is in crisis. After flames were seen in one of the plane's engines, the pilots shut down the right-hand engine. Flying on just one engine the flight diverts to East Midlands Airport and is preparing for an emergency landing, when the remaining engine loses all power.

And between the plane and the airport lies the M1 motorway.

On board the Boeing 737 400 are 118 passengers who experience the nightmare of a flight that crashes just yards from the landing strip, and onto the crowded motorway. The crash claims the lives of 74 passengers.

It is one of the worst accidents in British aviation history.

It's 4:39pm, and a packed summer holiday flight from Heathrow to Valencia in Spain is descending into utter chaos. Toxic smoke has filled the cabin and the cockpit, and its 175 passengers are struggling to breathe.

But that's just the start of their problems.

Fearing a deadly fire that could quickly engulf the aircraft and everyone on board, the pilots have only a few minutes to try and get the plane safely on ground and avoid a catastrophe.

This is the terrifying and incredible story of Flight BA422. Told by those who were on the flight, it's also captured in remarkable camera footage - filmed by the passengers as they gasped for air and faced the prospect of not getting off the plane alive.

It's 8.20 in the morning, and 17000 feet above Oxfordshire an unimaginable disaster has befallen a flight from Birmingham to Malaga. A front windscreen has blown out and a powerful, freezing wind is causing utter chaos in the passenger cabin. But the scene in the cockpit is even more terrifying. The captain has been sucked out of the empty window, his torso and head banging against the outside of the aircraft as a steward clings desperately onto his legs to try and stop him being lost completely.

Over the next hour, a truly remarkable story of terror and bravery unfolds as passengers struggle in oxygen deprived air, and the co-pilot is tasked with single handedly guiding the aircraft through busy airspace as a 250 mile-an-hour wind rushes into the flight deck.
