Howard and his wife, Martha(Julie Adams), have an 8-year-old son, Teddy (Dennis Larson). They also have an 3-year-old grandson Jake (Kirby Furlong), the offspring of their eldest son, Peter (Jonathan Daly), and his wife, Wendy (Ellen Geer). John McGiver appears as Howard's faculty crony, Dr. Luther Quince.
