October 2003 and Baghdad has been occupied by American forces for six months; but the disbandment of the Iraqi army, the police and civil leadership in the aftermath of the invasion means there is no one in charge and no effective rule of law.In the midst of this chaos, crime and paranoia, Iraqi ex-policeman Muhsin al-Khafaji has lost everything and is battling daily to keep himself and his sick daughter, Mrouj, safe. But when he learns that his estranged elder daughter Sawsan is missing Khafaji is forced into a desperate search to find her.
It is October 2003 and Iraq is occupied by a US-led coalition when ex-police inspector Muhsin al-Khafaji finds out his elder daughter Sawsan has gone missing while working as an interpreter. When he is asked to help rebuild a new Iraqi police service by British policeman Frank Temple, Khafaji has to decide whether to become a collaborator to gain access to the secure Green Zone and further his search for his daughter.
Khafaji is called to his first crime scene when an Iraqi man is found dead at a Coalition Authority safe house, and soon uncovers a second body, hidden and booby-trapped. US military policeman John Parodi clashes with Khafaji's boss Frank Temple, because the building is one of his. Khafaji later witnesses a daring attack on a Green Zone checkpoint by someone he immediately connects with Professor Zubeida Rashid and his missing daughter Sawsan.
Khafaji goes in search of truths about his daughter, but is surprised by the arrival of Frank Temple
Temple discovers his money is missing and has Khafaji arrested on false charges. On a raid, Parodi sees a photograph of three girls - who are they connected to?
Zubeida and Khafaji join forces in the hunt for Sawsan but their lead goes cold. A brutal murder is uncovered in the Green Zone and Parodi starts to suspect Temple of a darker involvement in the case.
