A new series of Bailte returns with Síle Nic Chonaonaigh continuing her journey through townlands across Ireland. With over 60,000 townlands in Ireland they remain one of the pillars of modern Irish life, and on this journey Síle explores the resilience within our rural communities and reveals the connection people have with their native townland and how local landscapes and traditions remain a constant influence on our lives.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh travels to Baile an Lochaigh on the Dingle Peninsula, where she meets a sheep farmer, a musician and couple with an equestrian business. She also meets a man who set up a sausage making business, and Johnny Tony Ó Muirchearaigh, who's family have lived there for generations.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh travels to Camus Uachtar in the Connemara Gaeltacht, home to just sixty inhabitants that mostly live around the coastline and beside Cnoc Chamuis.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits Machaire Rabhartaigh, a village with a population of over 200 inhabitants that stretches for three miles out from the coast. Here, she meets members of the community to learn about their culture, ways of life and the surrounding landscape.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits the townland of Heilbhic, situated on a peninsula in the Gaeltacht of An Rinn in Co Waterford.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits Baile Dhubhlocha in Joyce Country, which lies between Lough Mask to the north and Lough Corrib to the south.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits Dún Allt in Gleann Colm Cille, County Donegal, to see how the townland has fully embraced the tourism boom in recent years.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits the townland of An Mhuiríoch and the village of Baile na nGall in West Kerry, where she meets business owners in the area.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits Inis Mór, Árainn. To the east of the island, lies Cill Éinne, a townland named after the local Saint Éinne.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits the townland of An Eachléim in the Parish of Kilmore where we meet the stalwarts of a strong and proud community.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits Cill Rialaigh near Baile na Sceilg in South Kerry, a townland steeped in history, going right back to pre Christian times. She meets descendants of the people who lived in the pre famine village and those who have been heavily influenced by its beauty and culture, such as singer Tim Dennehy and poet Paddy Bushe.
Sile Nic Chonaonaigh visits An Ghleann on Cleire in County Cork, a townland which has been instrumental throughout the ages in world wide communication, housing the telegraph station and lighthouse that were crucial to the townland, island and country.
A visit to Taobh an Locha in the heart of Co Donegal, which is home to just one family, the Mac Monagails. Síle Nic Chonaonaigh spends time at their property and explores the stunning natural setting their home overlooks.
Síle Nic Chonaonaigh visits Cartúr on Muighnis, which lies off the coast of Carna in Connemara, famed for its rich history in building Hooker sailboats.
