Twenty-seven years ago Gil and Kelly Jo Bates tied the knot with no plans to have kids. Fast forward 19 kids later and this tight-knit family, seemingly too good to be true, has a tremendous bond but are far from perfect. As you will see, when you have a house full of 19 children, from ages two to 25, daily chaos is multiplied exponentially, but so are the joyful and poignant moments that life can bring.Led by devoted father Gil (49) and his loving wife Kelly Jo (47), the Bates do everything in bulk while staying true to their values and rules for the family -- which means everyone has chores, little to no TV, only dresses for girls (though pajamas are worn in private), strictly side-hugs until marriage (except for front hugs on special occasions), and more. With a grand total of 19 children ranging in age from two to 25, they are the definition of a "big, happy family." But lately -- as viewers will see -- their simple rural lifestyle in Tennessee is in a flurry of transitions, see it all on Bringing Up Bates.
The past year has been one of enormous change and growth for the Bates. In the Season 3 premiere, the Bates clan rallies together to help Michaella finally find the wedding dress of her dreams. Later the family braves a stormy outdoor wedding for Kelly Jo's sister, and celebrates Gil's dad, Papa Bill, with an awesome 4th of July birthday party!
It's time for the annual family lake trip! The kids waste no time jumping into the lake, swimming, boating and skiing! But what starts out as a perfect day soon turns to disaster when thunder strikes and the family has to head for the hills!
With the big wedding just days away the family is busier than ever. Gil and Kelly take the kids to the park for some rollerblading and playground exploring. Erin hosts a laughter filled candle making party for Michaella and her bridesmaids. Nathan, Lawson, and Trace take Brandon on an outing to the skating rink, but an accident on the ice could put the wedding in jeopardy.
With the wedding of Brandon and Michaella just days away, as the excitement builds for the big day, we take a look back at their relationship and courtship, from their first days together to the romantic proposal!
The day that Michaella has been waiting for is here! But after months of planning it's a bittersweet moment for the Bates family, who realize she'll soon be leaving home. There's lots to do before 800 guests arrive to celebrate and see Michaella and Brandon say, "I do" and finally share their first kiss.
Michaella and Brandon begin their life together as they travel to Montana for a romantic honeymoon exploring the great outdoors. Back at home, Gil treats his youngest daughters to a dinner date. They're growing up fast but they're still daddy's little girls! And Zach comes home from the police academy for a home cooked meal with Whitney and Josie.
Judson turns five and gets a brand new bike for his birthday. He's getting bigger but still needs some encouragement to take off the training wheels and hit the road. Erin heads to Nashville to record a Christmas album, but it takes time getting into a rhythm in the studio. Back at home Lawson, Nathan, and Trace get a visit from a couple of The Dixie Stampede trick riders and learn some tricks of their own.
Kelly Jo and the kids travel to Chicago to visit newlyweds Michaella and Brandon and help them get settled in their new apartment, and see the sites in the Windy City. Back in Tennessee, Zach graduates from the police academy and the whole family is there to celebrate this big achievement.
It's chaos at the Bates' home as the gang packs up and heads to Florida for some fun in the sun. The family hits the beach to play, build sandcastles, and snorkel for the first time. The boys try their luck fishing for dinner, but not everyone is so sure about the catch of the day ending up on their plate.
Inspired by Zach, the Bates decide to go through police training of their own with some help from the local Sheriff's department. Later, Lawson has a singing gig at a local hospital. And Chad helps Erin design the CD cover for her latest Christmas album.
With the three eldest sisters out of the house, the remaining girls decide it's time to redecorate their bedroom. And Zach and Whitney are doing a little redecorating of their own as they head out to shop for a new couch to spruce up their home. Later the girls test out a new recipe for dinner.
Time is flying and the Bates' first grandbaby, Bradley, is turning one! Kelly Jo and the girls look for gifts, but their outing goes overboard and quickly turns into a shopping spree. Lawson puts his best face forward at a photoshoot for his new album. Later, the family gathers for Bradley's birthday party and Whitney shares a big announcement.
Whitney's expecting! She and Zach have their first ultrasound to check on the baby. Gil and Kelly Jo have shared 19 kids and 28 years together, so the happy couple celebrates their wedding anniversary with a romantic dinner and talk of new things to come. Nathan calls a family meeting to share some exciting news!
A few of the Bates are heading to the Big Apple to visit their friends, Ashley and Anastasia. The city girls show our country boys, Nathan and Lawson, all the exciting sites of the city. They explore Times Square, take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, and go ice-skating where Nathan asks an important question.
