Comic Relief is an operating British charity, founded in 1985 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry in response to famine in Ethiopia. The highlight of Comic Relief's appeal is Red Nose Day, a biennial telethon held in March, alternating with sister project Sport Relief.
Lenny Henry , Griff Rhys-Jones and Jonathan Ross set rolling six hours of red-hot comedy. Bob Hoskins , Russ Abbot , Richard Briers , Jean Boht, Phillip Schofield and Bill Wyman squeeze into the sketch show Star Crazy!, Tony Robinson presents Cartoon Hits and Griff reports on the need for clean water among the Masai in Kenya.
8.00pm Hero Turtles, Stupid Videos and Lovely Julian
A message from the Hero Turtles, a compilation of funny home videos from Chris Tarrant , and Julian Clary hosts a celebrity phone line. Plus an unusual look at Comic Relief's work in the UK, and the start of A-Z of Comedy, with A for Aristocratic Twits and B for Basil Fawlty.
8.30pm Four Birds of a Feather and One Ronnie
A unique edition of Birds of Feather in which Sharon and Tracy meet two birds who look suspiciously like French and Saunders. Ronnie Corbett is live in the studio, and Melvyn Bragg traces the extraordinary career of Postman Pat.
Lenny, Griff and Jonathan stonk back with disastrous co-host, Viis Roger Mellie. Tony Robinson reports on refugees in Malawi, and Rowan Atkinson's Mr Bean celebrates Red Nose Day in his own sad way. Plus Blind Snog, a kisser of a game show.
10.00pm Bad News and the Barrys
Barry Norman presents The Barry Awards to the funniest film comedians with clips from their funniest films. Nominees include John Cleese , Peter Sellers , Steve Martin and Woody Allen. Plus the first performance in five years by the baddest (and worst) heavy metal band in the world - Bad News - and the first Take it From Me, a personal review of Comic Relief's UK work.
10.30pm Ben Elton , Victoria Wood and Boozy the Snail
Ben Elton throws down some comedy in the studio. Victoria Wood sings her Smile Song. Griff reports on a disability project in Kenya - and the A-Z of Comedy features The Blues Brothers, Tony Hancock , Steptoe and Son and Boozy the Inebriated Snail.
11.00pm Stonktabulous Type Stuff from Harry Enfield and Hale and Pace
Smashie and Nicey (Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse ) report on Red Nose Day from the studio of Radio Fab FM; Hale and Pace teach the world how to stonk; and the Red Nose Rock 'n 'Roll Years features Smith and Jones, and Madonna (well, almost).
11.30pm Wild Women and Wildlife
French and Saunders take over the presenting with a cracking hour of comedy, including brilliant bits from Thora Hird , Rita Rudner , Ruby Wax, Beryl Reid , Hilda Baker and the Golden Girls. Also the dire Mellie at Midnight and an extraordinary revelation of how Sir David Attenborough auditions the animals for those wildlife shows!
12.00 Battle of the Sex Gods
The evening reaches a thumping climax as Tom Jones duets with Theophilus P Wildebeeste. Vic Reeves stages a Red Nose Novelty Island, Steve Wright presents his listeners' favourite classic comedy, and more of Star Crazy! with Nicholas Lyndhurst, Rory Bremner and Glenda Jackson !
1.00am Late 'n' Hot 'n' Live
The running total sprints upwards, in hot competition with wild comedy from Robin Williams , Richard Pryor , Bill Cosby and Joan Rivers. Julian Clary gets even more intimate on the phones as Lenny, Griff and Jonathan come up with the final running total for this night. But it's not over yet....
1.30am Stonk Till You Drop!
The comedy roars on with a jamboree of all-time classic sketches wedged together.
Get your laughing boxes tuned and your brains in gear, with a look ahead to tonight's Comic Relief extravaganza at 9.20.
Lenny Henry , Griff Rhys Jones and Jonathan Ross take you "Behind the Nose" to root out the very best of Red Nose comedy, and to discover the reasons why the money people gave last year is so crucial. All with the help of Billy Connolly , Dame Edna Everage , Rowan Atkinson and 36 other top comedians.
Who's Funniest?
The evening explodes into action with the result of the Radio Times poll for the Best Comedy of Red Nose Day 1991 - Tom Jones v Theophilus P Wildebeeste, Robbie Coltrane , Birds of a Feather, MrBean and Postman Pat all vie for top billing. Also there's a whirlwind guide to how your money from last year is being spent from Scotland to the Sudan.
In this unusual documentary Tony Robinson travels throughout Tanzania to look at the real reasons for poverty in Africa. Back home helping to explain what he discovers are actors Richard Wilson and Jim Broadbent , with Peter Sissons , Gerald Scarfe , and Peter Snow , two talking trees and a Plasticine lion.
The evening is rounded off with reports on Comic Relief UK from Stephen Fry , Ben Elton and Dawn French. Plus classic comedy from the last six years of Comic Relief, featuring everyone from Harry Enfield to Ken Dodd , from Mel and Griff to Hale and Pace, from Mr Ben Elton to MrBean, from Frank Bruno to Frankie Howerd, and from Vic Reeves to Postman Pat via Ade Edmondson and Rik Mayall.
