In Cradle to Grave, 15-year-old Danny Baker is the guide through the ups and downs of life with the family. Fred ‘Spud' Baker is a proud south London docker with a penchant for cheeky scheming. Wife Bet loves him deeply but longs for the family to go 'straight' and play by the rules. With eldest daughter Sharon's looming wedding, the docks facing closure, and Danny's struggles to get closer to the opposite sex, times are tough.
Spud demonstrates his keen sense of hearing when it comes to money and wallets. Danny is a young man at a crossroads with the fabulous Miss Blondel - or Louise, as he's now allowed to call her. And something is stirring in Shaky Young's sister's loft.
Double lives are being led by father and son as Spud embarks on his first day on the straight and narrow as a commissionaire and Danny poses as David Essex's brother. But for Bet, it is the need for a bit of breathing space and her friendship with Keith at work that might prove the most dangerous of all.
A tale of two romantic milestones in the Baker family history - daughter Sharon's much anticipated wedding and the 1949 courtship of one Freddie Baker and Betty Lockwood. Meanwhile, Danny gets an interesting lecture from Yvonne.
