The great drama Estonia tells the story of the tragic sea accident of the car ferry M/S Estonia, which deeply shocked the whole world in the fall of 1994. The eight-part series explores, through the touching personal stories of victims, survivors, loved ones and researchers, how it is possible that 852 people lost their lives, and no one is responsible for it.
MS Estonia, which had an accident in the storm, has sent an emergency message. A large-scale rescue operation is underway in the Baltic Sea, and relatives waiting at the terminal want to know what has happened to their loved ones.
The research commission is meeting for the first time. The relatives want to hear from the authorities the truth about those who died and those who survived. The leaders of the commission tell the media that investigations cannot begin until the wreck of the ship has been found.
On the night of the accident, MS Europa receives an emergency call from MS Estonia. It is decided to turn the ship to help and a long and heavy night lies ahead. Although the wreck has now been found on the seabed, investigations cannot begin because the ship's visor is still missing.
MS Estonia's emergency positioning buoy can be found on the coast of Estonia. Estonian researchers would like to study the buoy themselves, but they have to hand over the buoy to Finland. The research commission's internal pressures escalate and it is no longer possible to continue the research work as it is.
The commission of inquiry calls the crew member who survived the MS Estonia for the seventh time to hear to find out what happened on the bridge when the crew found out that the ship had suffered a sea accident. However, can the memory of the witness be trusted?
The research commission is looking for a new chairman when the whole commission is about to dissolve. On the MS Estonia, the argument of the Swedish brothers returning from Tallinn about their future together is interrupted when water starts flowing from under the door into the cabin.
An Estonian dancer and a Swedish woman fight for their lives in the cold water after the sinking of the Estonia. Peltonen does his best to keep the investigation going, but when the budget is cut, he takes matters into his own hands.
The Accident Investigation Board decides to publish its final report. Survivors and relatives want justice and gather to honor all those who lost their lives.
