Shingo Ichinomiya was a young, single salaryman when he fell asleep one night at his dinner table. When he awakens, he's at a different dinner table during a wedding ceremony and in the body of a 5-year-old boy, whom he later learns is Wendelin von Benno Baumeister. Although he initially has the impression that he's part of a well-off noble family, he soon discovers that it was all for show; his family is actually poor and illiterate and lives in a thinly-populated area on the outskirts of civilization. Further, he's the youngest of eight sons, which doesn't bode well for his prospects. However, he also discovers that he can read the local writing, which leads to him discovering that he has a rare aptitude for wind magic. When he encounters Alfred Rainford, a former court wizard who also specializes in wind magic, his prospects start looking up.
When the trading company office worker Ichimiya Shingo wakes up from his nap he finds himself in an unfamiliar world in the body of a five-year-old boy, Wendelin (Well), from the noble Baumeister family. Though he`s confused at his new surroundings, he`s reassured to learn that he won`t have to worry about food as a noble`s son, but then he learns that he`s actually the eighth son of a poor noble family in remote lands.
Well becomes the disciple of Alfred the magician, steadily learning magic under his training. Meanwhile, Alfred warns him to keep his ability to use a magic a secret in order to avoid a succession dispute, but Well`s eldest brother Kurt begins to notice his talent for magic.
Now 12, Well joins the Adventurers` Academy, but as the only scholarship student for magic he finds himself alone and set apart from the rest. Meanwhile, Erwin, Iina, and Louise all join forces to try and get Well to join their party. Hoping to earn Well`s approval, they sneak into the hunting grounds where big game resides, but...
Well`s party boards a magic airship heading to the capital in order to attend the wedding of his brother, Erich. However, the airship encounters an ancient undead dragon along the way. With assistance from Brantag, Alfred`s Master, Well manages to defeat the dragon, and once he arrives at the capital he is proclaimed the "Dragon Slayer" and granted the rank of Baronet by the kingdom.
Well visits the church where Cardinal Hohenheim introduces his granddaughter, Elise. Thanks to the Cardinal`s clever manipulation of their conversation, Well is soon engaged to Elise, but he finds himself conflicted at the way all these nobles view political marriage as the natural course of things. Though Well isn`t entirely opposed to being with Elise, who`s known as "Saint" Hohenheim.
Elise pays Well a visit to try and learn more about her fiance, but Well has been summoned away by the Royal Palace. There Well is given a mission from the king and together with Brantag and the palace magician, Armstrong, he quickly sets off to exterminate a dragon and other monsters. Elise joins in their campaign as part of the medical team.
Well is forced to participate in the kingdom`s martial arts tournament due to his nobility. However, he quickly gives up hope of winning when he learns that magic is prohibited in the tournament. Meanwhile Er, Iina, and Louise also decide to participate. While Er was taking it lightly at first, certain developments cause him to promise that he`ll win it.
Now that Well and the others are 15-year-old adults, they officially form their adventuring party, the Dragon Busters. However, before they have time to enjoy adventuring they receive a mandatory quest from the kingdom and venture deep into ancient underground ruins that no one has yet to return from alive. Well and the others are transported deep underground by a trap, and what awaits them there is...
Well receives an enormous reward for his exploration of the ancient ruins, garnering the envy of other nobles. He also learns about the rumors of his death. So when Well decides to leave the Capital, he asks Roderich, the man who constantly sought to become his retainer, to take charge of his mansion. Roderich is moved to tears and immediately begins acting to pin down the culprit behin the rumors.
Well is forced to make an unexpected return home when Duke Bleichroder asks him to purify the undead lurking within the Enchanted Forest. Yet what awaits him at home is his openly hostile eldest brother Kurt. Well intends to leave as soon as he completes his quest, but he`s forced to remain there without ample explanation.
Well is made painfully aware that he still doesn`t understand nobles by a few words from Brantag. To make matters worse, he learns about the plots of his brother`s wife Amalie, the people living in his homeland, and the royal palace, leaving him less and less room to maneuver. After debating it for a while, he finally makes up his mind and takes action.
Kurt obtains the Dragon`s Flute and appears before Well and his comrades, planning to kill them. However, the magic item he obtained was actually the Flute of Malice, a cursed item which gathers malice and turns the user into an undead. After unwittingly living up to the expectations of those longed for Kurt to be overthrown, Well takes his greatest gamble yet...
