Centered on the lawless town known as "Hell on Wheels," which travels with the western end of the Union Pacific Railroad, the series explores the railroad's greed and corruption, the immigrant experience and the plight of the newly emancipated African-Americans.
Hell on Wheels stars Anson Mount as former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, who has journeyed west following the Civil War and struggles to escape his demons sparked by the conflict. Bohannon is participating in the building of the Union Pacific in its race to meet up with the Central Pacific’s line to form the first transcontinental railroad. Working often against Bohannon is Thomas "Doc" Durant (Colm Meaney), a greedy entrepreneur taking full advantage of changing times.
