Next Episode of India 1947: Partition in Colour is
unknown.
Colourised archive footage and archive documents tell the story of the division of British-ruled India into the independent dominions of India and Pakistan, and the subsequent outbreaks of violence and refugee crisis.
The first episode begins in 1946. Facing bankruptcy in the aftermath of the Second World War, the British Government presents its draft plan for independence, with recently appointed viceroy Lord Mountbatten announcing to the world that Britain will leave India in just 10 weeks.
Part two of two. In the wake of Mountbatten's announcement of the division of India, uncertainty over the new borders leads to tensions between different communities. The British are reluctant to intervene as violence spreads across northern India, with secret orders preventing British troops from being deployed to save Indian lives. Independence is celebrated in Pakistan and India, but when Mountbatten reveals the new border, violence escalates and millions migrate across northern India.
