The police station in the Berlin district of Köpenick is getting a new and unusual team: The former chief detective Robert Heffler, a single father of three daughters, was transferred to Berlin-Köpenick three years ago for personal reasons by the permanent detective service from a hotspot area as a dispatcher. Due to a lack of staff, at the request of department head Katharina Koblinsk, he is now to support the new colleague, Chief Detective Kay Freund, in a tricky murder case on the Spree. Freund is young and described as risk-taking and workaholic. Their first case together leads them to an unknown corpse in the Spree, which was stunned, slain and thrown into the water. In the course of the investigation, Heffler is confronted with his own past.
Robert and his colleague Kay clash with his lawyer Rico Heilmann during the arrest of a young violent criminal. While Kay goes clubbing after work, Robert goes home to his daughters. He is woken up early in the morning: Kay was murdered that night. She was shot with her own service weapon in an abandoned backyard. Why did she have drugs with her? And why does the social worker Theresa think that Kay worked as a nurse? When Robert finds Kay a threatening message from the youth who was arrested the day before, he seems to lose control. His behavior means that department head Katharina has to temporarily suspend him from duty.
The truck driver Carsten Eggers is found shot to death in the driver's cab of his truck. Was he deliberately lured into the isolated forest by the perpetrator? Overshadowed by the death of his colleague Kay, Robert has to get involved with his new partner Mavi Neumann, who is assigned to him by his boss and secret affair Katharina to investigate the case. Together, Robert and Mavi find out that Eggers had been leading a complex double life with two families for over 18 years. On the one hand, Raja Eggers and their two daughters Dana and Melissa, on the other hand, Astrid Mankowitz and their son Finn. Did one of his two wives find out? During the course of the investigation, Carsten's best friend Hanno Richter is targeted by Robert and Mavi.
Nico Bajetzky, the operator of a scrap yard, is found shot to death in his car on the banks of the Spree. The act almost looks like an execution. The investigators are anything but welcome on the farm of the family business that specializes in electronics recycling. Is it just sadness, or does the widow Daniela Bajetzky have something to hide? Robert Heffler sneaks into the company undercover and learns a lot about the dynamics within the scrapyard family, about envy and resentment. Tom Bajetzky, Nico's brother, comes under suspicion; But Sandro Reichert, the boss of a competing company from Brandenburg, also seems to have questionable motives. Meanwhile, Stella is suspected of dealing weed at school. She remains stubbornly silent about the allegations.
Single mother Jasmin Leitner sits seemingly peacefully by a tree in a park. But appearances are deceptive: the 35-year-old is dead. She was strangled. Does the crime have anything to do with your integrative café? There, Jasmin hired young people who live on the streets. Your car being broken into near the crime scene speaks for this. Mavi and Robert have no idea that Jasmin's son Tommy is a friend of Robert's daughter Emmi, who is currently skipping school with him. The two teens are hanging out at Tommy's house when the two investigators show up. Robert has to inform Tommy about his mother's death.
Petra Berger is found dead at her dining room table - bound and gagged. In front of her are a pot of tea, a moldy sandwich and a withered apple. Inspectors Heffler and Neumann also discover that the house was pelted with paint bombs. The victim's hair is smeared with red paint. A ritual murder? Robert realizes that an example has been made here. But why?
Hannes Seidel lies dead in the shaft of a multi-storey car park. Camera images show a dispute between him and his 17-year-old niece Lilly – there has been no trace of her since then. The altercation between the two could be related to Lilly's previous shopping mall smoke attack, which she committed with two other people. Is her escape an admission of guilt? The investigators immediately issue a manhunt for the young environmental activist. When Heffler and Neumann visit Lilly's father in the thriving family business, the latter states that he has no idea of his daughter's whereabouts. The relationship between father and daughter seems to be very tense.
When it turns out that Lilly will inherit the small boat factory when she comes of age and wants to take over the management from her father, Jochen Seidel is targeted by the investigators. Did Lilly want to use her beloved Uncle Hannes, with whom she wanted to lead the company into a greener and more sustainable future? Jochen was strictly against it. Lilly could provide the answer, but she remains as if swallowed up by the face of the earth. In search of her, the tracks lead to an online platform - the "Nature Future Friends", where Lilly was active. Julia Bernhoff, who was present at the smoke attack, could provide information on this. She does not reveal who the third person was. The investigators should contact Mark Nowak, a lecturer at the university. But even he can't really help the investigators.
Meanwhile, Robert is struggling with his daughter Charlotta's new career aspirations, which is pushing him to his limits. The situation comes to a head when the results from forensic medicine are available. Hannes Seidel was still alive after the fall and was subsequently suffocated. Was Lilly really the perpetrator or did she witness the murder and is now in mortal danger herself? Heffler and Neumann suddenly recognize the game of power and manipulation and know who is pulling the strings.
