September 1914. For several weeks, the fighting has been raging. In a small village in the east of France, a few kilometers from the German zone, four women find themselves thrown into the heart of the horror: Marguerite, a Parisian prostitute as mysterious as flamboyant who is suspected of being a spy; Caroline, wife of Victor Dewitt, owner of a car factory, gone to the front, sees herself propelled to the head of the family business, a colossal and unprecedented challenge for a woman of the beginning of the century; Agnès, mother superior of a convent requisitioned and transformed into a military hospital is overwhelmed by the influx of wounded, she is increasingly tormented and questions her life choices; finally, Suzanne, a young feminist nurse wanted for murder...
Agnès finds her convent transformed into a war hospital. Marguerite seeks work at the local brothel. Suzanne flees to Switzerland with Jeanne's help.
Caroline's brother-in-law sabotages her plans for the factory. Agnès develops a soft spot for a new patient. Marcel uncovers why Marguerite left Paris.
Suzanne's medical talents earn respect from Joseph, but Agnès remains suspicious of her identity. Marguerite goes to the front to return Colin's dog tag.
The ambush at the lake gives Caroline an idea. Marguerite helps the girls ousted from the brothel find work. Till tempts Agnès' loyalty — and her faith.
President Poincaré presents Agnès, Suzanne, Marguerite and Caroline with medals of honor, but all four have more pressing matters on their minds.
As Lucien continues to blackmail Suzanne, Agnès discovers a horrifying development at the convent. Marguerite tries to rectify things with Colin.
Agnès contacts the diocese. Suzanne races to save Joseph. Outed by a vengeful Charles, Caroline finds herself in dire straits — and German territory.
As the Germans close in on Saint-Paulin and all civilians are ordered to evacuate, the bonds of those left behind are put to the ultimate test.
