Medium Allison DuBois is a strong-willed mother of three who has struggled since childhood to make sense of her visions of dead people. Hoping to prove to Allison that her dreams are stress induced, her scientist husband, Joe, sends descriptions of Allison's visions to a number of law enforcement agencies, expecting nothing to come of it. To his surprise, one of Allison's dreams bears an eerie similarity to a Texas homicide case involving a 17-year-old murder suspect. The case pits Allison against Capt. Kenneth Push, a cynical Texas Ranger who is suspicious of her psychic abilities. By the end of the investigation, Capt. Push has a new respect for Allison—and she makes a life-altering decision of her own.
The sister of Devalos's friend is murdered and Allison tries to help solve the crime. Her dreams don't seem to make sense though, as they keep implicating the friend's first husband, who died two years ago, as the murderer.
Allison dreams of a ghost who was a witness to several murders. Meanwhile, Ariel has a strange reaction to an assignment in health class.
While working on a 17-year-old crime, Allison exhibits unusual behavior that may be pivotal in solving the case, but at the same time puts her family at risk. Meanwhile, Joe's dinner invitation to a colleague yields surprising results.
Allison wakes up under a freeway overpass, not knowing where she is or how she got there. Her lack of recent memory causes her to start thinking she may have killed someone with her car.
Allison is asked by Devalos to help some of his friends find their missing daughter, but encounters conflicting evidence of who is responsible for her disappearance. Meanwhile, Lynn and Scanlon encounter relationship trouble.
Several disturbing dreams of an impending apocalypse cause Allison to take drastic measures in preparation for the end of civilization.
Allison is visited once again by the ghost of Agent Cooper, who tries to help her figure out who the real murderer is in a confusing case. Allison begins to question Agent Cooper's motives though and is unsure whether or not she should heed his advice.
Allison has a dream about a game show that can detect lies, and upon waking up she hears a buzzer in her head whenever someone tells her a lie. Allison's new talent is put to good use during a murder investigation.
Allison suspects that a missing woman may be a victim of her strange children. Meanwhile, Joe's sister Sarah shows up unannounced.
Allison wakes up five years in the past after she and Devalos are gunned down by a strange man. In the past, Allison's dreams tell her that Devalos is going to convict an innocent man of murder. Allison must convince Devalos, who at this point has never met Allison, of her abilities and get him to change his mind about the murder conviction.
A man named Lucas Harvey is stalking Allison, convinced that he's doing the work of God by getting rid of her and her ability. The Dubois family becomes confined to their house, under police supervision, after Harvey becomes a threat to the whole family.
Allison continues to be tormented by Lucas Harvey, her obsessed stalker. Harvey corrupts Allison's dreams, making her unhelpful to Devalos and Scanlon during a serial murderer case.
Allison leaves her job at the D.A.'s office after she's recruited to work for the Lydecker Corporation by another psychic who works there. While enjoying her new job, Allison still regrets leaving the D.A.'s office so suddenly, and has dreams about a serial killer running loose in Phoenix. Meanwhile, extenuating circumstances cause Ariel to start taking pills.
While at her new job at the Lydecker Corporation, Allison shares the dreams she's been having of the serial killer in Phoenix with Devalos and Scanlon. Her new boss finds out though, and is unhappy with her.
Allison struggles with her decision to switch jobs. When she continues to have visions about a serial killer she is forced to choose between honoring the contract with her new job and sharing her information with the police.
After falling into a coma during an investigation, Allison's spirit finds its way into the body of a man named Todd Emory. Joe and the kids have to adjust to living with Allison's spirit in the body of Todd, who insists on living with them.
Allison turns to Cynthia Keener (who is now in jail) when she starts dreaming of a former kidnap victim who Cynthia had once rescued.
While Allison is coping with Joe's job relocation to San Diego, she dreams about and then subsequently meets a bank teller named Ms. Boddicker who predicted a robbery at her bank.
Allison begins to dream of losing her entire family. When aspects of the dream start happening in real life, she fears her dream it may be coming true.
