Mountain Vets takes viewers to the ancient Kingdom of Mourne, where animals out number people ten to one, and where no two days are the same for the busy mountain vets.Rising up from lakeshore lowlands to Mountain peaks, the Mourne area is well known for its stunning natural beauty and traditional country life - and it is here we will follow the work of nine mountain vets, several nurses and stable hands in three very different vet practices, observing as they care for a diverse range of animals in clinics, on farms and smallholdings. From old-hand to new recruits working together, the three practices cover the whole Mourne Mountain area, responding to over 100 clinic cases and call outs a day. From a rare five-legged calf to emergency surgery on a horse, overweight cats and rescued seals, the doors are constantly revolving with an array of unusual and unexpected cases for the vets to treat. And though things might not always go according to plan and tragedies do happen, the Mountain Vets do everything they can for the animals in their care.
Vet Maurice is called to an extraordinarily rare birth, equine vet Inge tries to help a dangerous donkey, and Rachel helps a hedgehog who's woken early from hibernation.
A pregnant sheep must undergo an emergency caesarean, while Flame the dachshund and Monty the fell pony present worrying symptoms that put the vets' knowledge to the test.
Rachael attends to a cow with a potentially fatal displaced stomach, and vet Martin operates on a valuable sheepdog to try to save its injured leg.
Maurice delivers a valuable litter of 11 sniffer dogs, Rachel operates on a therapy dog with possible cancerous skin growths, and a woman with Asperger's adopts a wild bird.
The vets care for animals with all kinds of value - from high worth racehorses to pedigree bulls and irreplaceable family pets.
Vet Rachael Frew heads out to a pre-booked appointment with a farmer she knows well. Damien produces meat from a large herd of Dexter cattle and his prize possession is bull Charlie, who has won several awards. Damian has had his eye on a young bull to follow in Charlie's footsteps, but it is not working out. Elsewhere, tests are carried out on a Yorkshire terrier that has stopped eating, stable-hand Caroline prepares cow Daisy for her first competition at the Balmoral Show and Inge D'Haese uses all of her skills to perform a tricky procedure to correct a horse's stance.
