The Hines family was your typical close-knit Texas suburban family, who struggled with the distractions of modern technology. Patriarch Brett Hines, a former Army counter-intelligence officer and military contractor, was often away on missions while mother Wendy stayed home and took care of their seven children. After nearly two decades of service, Brett realized how disconnected they were as a family and to the world around them, so he had a vision to create a homestead completely off-grid in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. Using skills and techniques honed by Brett in the military overseas, the family must learn to secure food, power and heat for survival. But as winter rapidly approaches, will Brett's military experience be enough for them to successfully survive the harsh conditions they must face, and become a closer family than ever?
To unplug from the modern world, Brett Hines moves his family from the suburbs to the untamed wilderness of Central Washington; while setting up their new home, they come face to face with predators.
To create a sustainable food system, the Hines start building a greenhouse; Brett sends Drew and Sarah to retrieve a massive trailer that will become a root cellar, but the trip up the mountain proves harrowing.
The threat of fire season pushes Michael to lead construction on the root cellar; Nathan and Joshua craft a water truck; Ariel makes a tasty treat to beat the heat.
Brett and Danny have a surprising encounter in the woods; missing their creature comforts from the suburbs, Ariel and Nathan build an off-grid pizza oven, and Drew and Sarah design a bicycle-powered washing machine.
Drastic seasonal changes force the Hines to focus on heating the barn, so Nathan engineers a wind turbine, but it will take brute force and incredible teamwork to erect the monstrosity and provide much-needed power.
A relentless predator catalyzes Sarah to put her shooting skills to the test; the Hines family scrambles to insulate the barn; tensions mount when Brett and Nathan disagree on a plan.
With a storm front moving in and food dangerously low, the Hines clan makes a final push to restock their stores and stay warm; then, two of their own don't return from a trade run, and it's up to Brett to rescue them.
Never-before-seen footage and insights reveal how the Hines struggled during their first winter as they built their new homestead in the highlands of Washington, far from the comforts of the suburbs.
