Cloning, bioterrorism, genetic engineering, not since the atom bomb has science had such potential to change the world. Canada, Mexico, and the United States have created a trilateral taskforce, The North American Biotechnology Advisory Commission, or NorBAC, to investigate questionable advances in the fields of biotechnology, bio-weaponry and nanotechnology.Under the charismatic leadership of Chief Scientist David Sandstrom and Executive Director Caroline Morrison, the Toronto-based organisation struggles to understand the political, legal, and personal underbrush in which new science has become entangled.
Six months after the explosions that incinerated their high-tech lab and several employees, NorBac continues to rebuild itself. The team must deal with the deaths of several of their friends and colleagues as they welcome new people for the team. New virologist Rachel Woods studies the DNA of a gay-basher suspected of killing a fellow student.
NorBAC speculates a dangerous, airborne bacterium is a result of the explosion of the lab in Utah. The team must engineer a cure to eradicate it before it proves fatal for David and Bob.
A $3 billion U.S. budget cut threatens NorBAC's operation as an abnormal West Nile-like virus breaks out in San Francisco. A scientist at the University of Toronto offers to help Owen overcome his addiction.
NorBAC scrambles to find Patient Zero as a deadly virus continues to ravage San Francisco and Boston. Owen tries to commit suicide while David and Angelica argue over his treatment options.
The team traces the Sinatra virus to an organ donor in the Philippines. Washington State's wilderness is contaminated by a massive amount of mercury. David feels responsible for allowing Owen to try experimental gene therapy to cure his drug addiction.
Mayko tries to rid herself from the pain of her phantom limb. The team investigates the high level of mercury contamination found in Lake McGraw.
Despite his limited vision, Bob proves to be an asset to the team as they search for the source of a resistant strain of c. difficile.
NorBAC investigates when several firefighters, responding to forest fires in British Columbia, present strange symptoms. The team detects deadly toxins, consistent with bio-terrorism.
NorBAC must find the creator of the weaponized biological agent that was released during fires on the West Coast. Rachel's son is attacked by a bear while researching a sudden change in their behavior.
David discovers that NorBac has been tapped by Riddlemeyer. The team must find what caused the bear to attack Craig with no reason as a human being presents the same symptoms. David decides on a peculiar procedure to save Bob's eyesight.
Bob undergoes his eye surgery in the hope he won't go totally blind in the process but his prognosis is uncertain. In Nova Scotia, a ship's crew goes missing and the captain is the lone survivor, but he can't remember anything from the past two weeks.
Fears arise that Carlos may have been infected with Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever. Bob becomes hypersensitive to the emotions of others following his successful surgery. A magnetobacteria threatens the country's electronic infrastructure and Carlton is held accountable.
NorBAC discovers a link between the tantalum contamination and the recent smallpox scam. Meanwhile, a viral activation of dormant genes evolves Bob into a higher consciousness.
