Rescue: River Deep, Mountain High is a series following the exploits of the volunteer rescue services from Mountain Rescue teams, coast guard and air ambulances to deep water lifeboats at sea and inshore, these brave men and women will show us how they rescue people in dire straits, and battle with the hostile elements of some of our most famous landscapes.
Ireland's national champion surfer Gearoid McDaid takes a serious fall in the surf and badly injures his leg, so members of the Irish Tow Surf Rescue Club are asked to pick him up and lead him to safety. The Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is called to a mountain biker who's fallen over the handlebars and torn an artery. His life is in the balance and it is only the quick thinking of a passer-by and the prompt arrival of the rescue team and air ambulance that ensures his survival.
In the Cairngorm mountains in Scotland, a group of handlers and their search and rescue dogs undergo final training in the snowy peaks. Every search and rescue dog will train for up to two years before it is deemed ready to act within mountain rescue teams looking for lost and injured walkers. In the Galtee Mountains of Tipperary, Search and Rescue dog Ziggy is searching for an injured walker somewhere near Galtee mountain, while in the Peak District the Kinder Mountain Rescue Team attends a walker in severe pain with a broken ankle.
A walker on Croagh Patrick Mountain sustains a serious head injury and members of the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team carry him down the mountainside to the Irish Coast Guard helicopter. Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team are called to a climber who has fallen several feet on a rocky outcrop known as Lurchers Crag, while a world-class surfer at Mullaghmore sustains a severe leg injury.
