Dan Sun and his family are a new kind of Chinese immigrant to Canada – rich, confident and aggressive. Dan has made a fortune in China but now he wants to protect his money and his family from the political corruption back home. Rachel, his wife, tries to navigate their ascension into the upper echelons of Canadian society. Son Sammy does his best to run away from all family obligations while daughter Nicole tries to impress on her father that she really makes a better son than Sammy. But Dan must balance the needs of his family against the constant expectations of the government back in China. Like his family, they always want something more from him.
Dan returns to China to try to get his money out but discovers that all is not as it seems with Ye Ye and his banker Ying. Dan tries to stay out of jail in China while Rachel tries to keep the family together and find a good hotel for Dan to buy in Canada.
Dan moves heaven and earth to put his Niagara hotel deal together while Rachel tries to arrange the party. But all is thrown into chaos when Dan's mistress shows up in Canada and 3rd Secretary Li issues another demand.
Dan struggles to cover his hotel deal and buy the 5G company but the Italians are making things difficult. Rachel leaves to be with her sick father and Nicole steps in to take her place and advance her own agenda.
Sammy returns and Dan takes him under his wing to teach him the business, much to Nicole's chagrin. In the face of disaster Dan concocts a bold plan to save himself from the Italians and his Chinese masters.
