The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual award show which previously aired in national television syndication, and honors the best in Black music and entertainment. It is produced by the makers of Soul Train, the program from which it takes its name, and features musical performances by various R&B and Soul recording artists interspersed throughout the ceremonies. The special traditionally used to air in either February, March or April, but now airs the last weekend of November (in most years, Thanksgiving weekend).The Soul Train Music Awards voting body includes active professionals in the fields of radio programming and music retail and management and recording artists with records that have charted in designated music trade publications in the year prior to proceedings. Past hosts for the show include such R&B luminaries as Luther Vandross, Dionne Warwick, Patti LaBelle, Will Smith, Vanessa Williams, and Gladys Knight. The Soul Train Music Award trophy has featured an African ceremonial mask since its 1987 introduction. A new trophy was designed by Tristan Eaton of Thunderdog Studios in 2009 and is manufactured by New York firm Society Awards. R&B singer Janet Jackson holds the record for the most Soul Train Awards won with 13 wins.
Actor, singer and writer Tisha Campbell ("Martin," "My Wife & Kids," "Last Man Standing," "Outmatched") will once again join actor, singer, and writer Tichina Arnold ("Martin," "Everybody Hates Chris," "The Neighborhood," "The Last Black Man in San Francisco") as host and co-producers of this year's awards. The iconic best friend duo, both on the 90's hit show "Martin" and in real-life, will return to the "SOUL TRAIN AWARDS" stage for the third time, bringing their dynamic comedy and infectious personalities to this year's ceremony.
H.E.R. leads the nominees for this year's awards, receiving eight nominations including ‘Best R&B/Soul Female Artist' and double nods in each of the ‘The Ashford and Simpson Songwriters Award,' ‘Best Collaboration' and ‘Video of the Year' categories. She is followed by Chris Brown, who received seven nominations including ‘Album/Mixtape of the Year,' ‘Song of the Year,' ‘Best Dance Performance,' ‘Best Collaboration' and ‘Video of the Year' for the hit single "Go Crazy" with Young Thug.
Beyoncé and Young Thug received six nominations, including ‘Song of the Year' and ‘Video of the Year.' Other top nominees include Chloe x Halle, Summer Walker and Usher with five nods each, followed by YG with four nominations. Brandy and PJ Morton round out the group with three nods apiece.

Ashanti will be honored with the Lady of Soul Award, while Maxwell will receive the Legend Award.

Morris Day & The Time will receive the ‘Legend' award.
Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige lead nominations with an impressive 7 nominations.
Ari Lennox garnered the second most nods with 6 nominations.
‘Video of the Year.' Lizzo and Chris Brown are tied at 5 nods each, followed by Burna Boy, Muni Long and Steve Lacy with 4 nods. Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic, PJ Morton and Tems each garnered 3 nominations.
BJ The Chicago Kid, Coco Jones, Danté Bowe, Fridayy, Muni Long, SWV, and Keke Palmerare set to perform.
Grammy®-nominated global superstar and visionary Janelle Monáe will receive the ‘Spirit Of Soul' award.
T-Pain will receive the ‘Legend' Award.
