Highlights of the weekend's action in the SPFL . On Saturday, a big crowd will be expected on Tayside as Dundee host Hearts following the Tynecastle club's return to the top flight. Then on Sunday, champions Celtic make the short journey across Glasgow to play Partick Thistle. Plus action from Friday night's encounter between Rangers and St Mirren at Ibrox in the opening weekend of the Championship.

Highlights of the weekend's action in the SPFL. In the Premiership, Inverness Caledonian Thistle are in Glasgow to face champions Celtic. Ronny Deila's side inflicted a 5-0 defeat on John Hughes's men on their last visit to Celtic Park in the final match of last season, but the Highlanders had proved themselves capable of causing an upset with their famous Scottish Cup semi-final victory over the Glasgow giants in April. Elsewhere, there's a Tayside derby as Paul Hartley's Dundee make the short trip to play Tommy Wright's St Johnstone. All eyes will be on Pittodrie Stadium in the Granite City this weekend as Aberdeen face Celtic in their first league encounter of the Scottish Premiership campaign. If Aberdeen are to challenge Celtic for the title, then they will be looking to take points from the champions, something they failed to do last term. However, Aberdeen is the only top flight outfit with a 100% record so far this season.

Elsewhere, Dundee Utd host Kilmarnock, with both sides looking to kick-start their seasons. And early pace-setters Hearts are in the highlands to play Inverness.

League leaders Aberdeen look to halt a run of three straight defeats in league and cup when they travel Ross County, still hurting from their recent Highland derby defeat to Inverness. Should they slip up, Celtic will return to the summit of the table if they avoid defeat at Motherwell. Inverness CT went unbeaten against Kilmarnock last season and will be keen to continue that pattern when they travel to Rugby Park. Elsewhere, Partick Thistle, who finally picked up their first league win after 10 attempts, will have their work cut out when they travel to face in-form St Johnstone while Hamilton host Dundee. On Sunday, bottom club Dundee United entertain Hearts. There will also be selected action from the Championship.

United, who came off second best during the two sides' marathon four-game run of meetings at the end of last season, will be looking for improved fortunes under new manager Mixu Paatelainen.

There is a top-of-the-table clash in store as leaders Celtic welcome challengers Aberdeen to Celtic Park. The Dons form has been patchy of late, but they know they have what it takes to win, after beating Celtic at Pittodrie earlier in the season.

Euro-chasing Hearts and Ross County face away games against two of the division's stugglers - Hearts are at Partick and County travel to Tannadice to take on bottom club Dundee United. Hamilton entertain St Johnstone and Inverness take on Dundee - two games which could say a lot about the top-six credentials of all four sides.

Annan Athletic from League Two play Hamilton, while cup holders Inverness start their first defence of the trophy at Stirling Albion. Celtic have lifted the oldest trophy in world football a record 36 times, but after their controversial defeat to Inverness in last season's semi-final they will be aiming to go all the way this time, starting with a tie at League One Stranraer.
