Strays follows Shannon Ross the new executive director of the Hamilton East Animal Shelter, where she is boss to an eclectic staff. Now in her 30s, Shannon is ready for a change and new challenges. She's putting Toronto in the rearview to focus on her new job, new relationships, reuniting with family and learning more about herself. Shannon's trademark positivity is put to the test as she manages an oddball team, including her apathetic cousin Nikki, her over-eager animal care manager Kristian, her overly sheltered office manager Joy and the building's maintenance guy Paul, whose straight-faced prison humour keeps everyone on their toes.
Shannon contends with an unwanted guest in the HEAS parking lot, then struggles to balance her commitment to community with her desire to impress a new board member, Tonya.
Shannon struggles to set boundaries with Tonya as they collaborate on the newly-minted Gran-Paws program. Travis' dog goes missing, and Nikki discovers a new talent.
Shannon considers reconnecting with her birth mother, then brings Joy along for a meeting with a potential donor. Kristian helps Paul connect with a childhood hero.
Shannon makes an appointment with Kristian's therapist. Lara advises Joy to keep her emotions in check at work, and Nikki begrudgingly lets Peggy assist with dog grooming.
Shannon and Joy co-host a reality TV finale party. Nikki hates on Paul's new partner, and Kristian and Liam help Lara weigh the pros and cons of dating Ravi.
Shannon discovers something unexpected when she directs Travis in a video for the shelter's Gran-Paws program. Liam and Nikki convince Paul to chase his dream, while Joy keeps a secret from Lara.
Shannon looks to impress at a Gran-Paws shelter visit, but a text mishap threatens to derail her day. Kristian is forced to un-book a special day off, causing Peggy to come to his defense.
