In the first episode, a surgical robot is used to treat a tumour on a patient's voice box, in a procedure that has never been attempted before. Other surgeons must perform a complex procedure to try to save a photographer's arm, and remove new cancer growth in a patient's abdomen.
Professor Vin Paleri must establish if a patient with a fast-growing tumour in his tongue is viable for a complex surgery using tissue from his leg to reconstruct his throat. Specialist Mr Ricky Bhogal performs an intensive procedure to remove a tumour completely from a patient's portal vein, which, if compromised during surgery, would be fatal.
Professor Vin Paleri attempts to reconstruct a throat cancer patient's entire windpipe - but one mistake could leave him unable to swallow or speak. A woman who had a fybroid removed from her womb discovers it contains a rare form of cancer, and will now need to have her entire reproductive system removed. A patient has a rare cancer growing in the back of his abdomen.
