10 bakers were chosen from a nationwide search of amateur bakers at local casting bake-offs. Proving the joy of bakings broad appeal, the six female and four male home bakers have varied lives and jobs, including a firefighter, photographer, homemaker, attorney, advertiser, home health care provider, college student, retiree, project manager and a baking enthusiast trying to go pro. Each week these passionate home bakers competing in three unique challenges, Signature Bake, Technical Bake and Showstopper Bake. The contestant who out-bakes the rest is that week's Star Baker, while the one whose creations fail to impress is eliminated. The final challenge will be between the three remaining contestants, one of whom will go on to be crowned the best amateur baker in America and win the $250,000 grand prize. In the series premiere, a baking firefighter battles his own fire in the kitchen and a Southern baker introduces judge Paul Hollywood to chocolate bacon.
Tensions rise as one baker gets burned for deceiving the judges, one whips up a batch of treats so good they deem them "slap yo mama" cookies, and someone crumbles under the pressure.
Creative juices begin to flow as the bakers face a "Surprise-Inside" cake challenge, and one baker may be overconfident when they mix soda pop and cake batter.
Bakers begin to sweat when they need to present their breads to one of the world's premiere bread bakers, Judge Paul Hollywood, and one baker hopes her red-hot candies will fire up the judges.
Brian and Francine go to war over their shared refrigerator, and the bakers must stagger their start and end times during their technical challenge to produce the perfect dessert.
The contestants face a double elimination in a semi-final showdown, and Brian puts aside his competitive nature to help a fellow baker.
As the final three bakers compete in a winner-take-all battle for $250,000 and a cookbook contract, the pressure reaches an all-time high, leading one of them to break down. Also, the contestants also face their toughest challenges yet when they need to use peanuts in their Signature Bakes, as well as make 72 American flag-inspired miniature desserts for their Showstoppers.
