Life on board one of the world's largest luxury cruise ships will be revealed in The Cruise. The series goes behind the scenes as the ship travels through the Baltic Sea from Copenhagen to St Petersburg, following some of the 1,400 crew as they deal with the daily demands of up to 4,000 passengers.
In the first episode, bad weather threatens to stop the Royal Princess docking in port with huge knock-on effects across the ship. As staff welcome 4,000 new passengers in Athens, Timothy is under pressure to hit sales targets on the shore excursion desk and devises a creative way to up his numbers.New hotel general manager Craig is only six weeks into the biggest job of his career and must find ways to motivate his staff who work long hours far from home. And four Norfolk women come aboard including cruise first-timer Maureen who's hoping to find love on the ocean waves.
There's tension in the galley as a health inspection looms, alcohol supplies dwindle to worryingly low levels, and Timothy's linguistic skills are tested to the limit. As the Royal Princess continues its busy summer season cruising around the Mediterranean, Europe is sweltering in the record high temperatures of heatwave Lucifer. As passengers try to cool themselves in the pool, the galley comes under very demanding scrutiny.
As Royal Princess continues its busy summer season in the Mediterranean, the ship has just left Livorno in Tuscany. Breakfast is barely over and Executive Chef David is already facing his first crisis of the day. There's a serious shortage of orange juice and he's going to have to come up with a solution - fast. Meanwhile, the ship welcomes a group of blind and partially sighted passengers. Although everyone is on a cruise, these passengers' guide dogs must still take part in a safety drill.
In the fourth episode, the Royal Princess is full to capacity in the beautiful Aegean port of Santorini. As the housekeeping team undertake the daily bed change in thousands of cabins, hotel general manager Craig gets an unwelcome call - the ship's laundry is having a meltdown.A breakdown in the huge washing machine which normally processes tens of thousands of items a day has already produced a mountainous backlog of dirty washing and Craig needs to find a solution quickly.Above decks it's all change in the entertainment department with a new cruise director, 29-year-old Tobi. Stepping up from deputy for the first time, Tobi is now the boss of a dozen theatrical shows, 21 musicians and the team of four assistants who organise the hundreds of activities on the ship. He must prove he's up to the job.
In the fifth episode, it's turnaround day and Royal Princess is docked in Europe's busiest cruise terminal, Barcelona. Along with four thousand new passengers, the crew must load 120 tonnes of food and drink aboard for the next week-long cruise around the Med. Executive chef David discovers he has far too much of one ingredient and needs to get very creative with his menus to use it all up before it spoils. It's tomatoes for breakfast, lunch and supper until they have made inroads into their red mountain.
In the sixth and final episode, as the Mediterranean summer season draws to a close, the crew face one final big challenge - two weddings in one day. With a UK wedding now averaging £34,000, couples are opting to tie the knot on board the ship, where packages can be a fraction of the cost.
