As the series premieres, Melanie Barnett (Tia Mowry) is a first-year medical school student who has given up an offer of admission to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore to follow her boyfriend Derwin Davis (Pooch Hall), a professional football player, to San Diego, against the advice of her parents. Derwin Davis is a first-year rookie with a fictional team called the "San Diego Sabers". As Melanie settles into her new life, she meets Tasha Mack (Wendy Raquel Robinson), the mother of Sabers' starting quarterback Malik Wright (Hosea Chanchez), and Kelly Pitts (Brittany Daniel), the then wife of Sabers' captain Jason Pitts (Coby Bell). As she learns to balance her new roles as both med student and the partner of a professional football player, Tasha and Kelly immediately warn her to keep a close eye on her boyfriend because of the numerous "gold diggers" who approach the professional football players. Over time the relationships evolves with the players and the significant others, leading to the series to more focus on their relationships and less on the sport. (source: en.wikipedia.org)
After Melanie confesses to Derwin that she is still in love with him, Derwin shocks her with the news that Janay may be his baby mama. Kelly enlists help from her obnoxious parents, Bren and Nick, to keep Jason out of her life. Meanwhile, Malik is freaked out about his mom (Wendy Raquel Robinson) finding out that he married Robin Givens.
Suspecting foul play, Melanie decides to confront Janay and figure out whether she's really pregnant with Derwin's baby. Kelly, who is still trying to come to terms with her separation from Jason, plans a girls' night out with Tasha and Melanie. Tasha finally tracks down Malik and he is finally forced to confess his big news to his mother.
Although Rick is crazy about Tasha and more than ready to go public with their new romance, Tasha borderlines on obsessive in her attempt to keep their relationship a secret from their co-workers. Malik begins to realize that his marriage may never have a happy-ever-after when Robin seems more intent on getting publicity for their celebrity marriage than on spending time together as newlyweds. Melanie and Derwin try to resume their sex life, but Derwin's stress about becoming a father may prove to be too big of a hurdle for the couple to overcome.
Melanie is jealous of the attention Derwin is giving Janay after he accompanies Janay to her first pregnancy appointment. Kelly tells Jason she thinks it's time to tell their daughter, Brittany, about their separation, but he refuses to take part in the conversation, leaving Kelly even more confused about how best to handle the situation.
Hoping to get more publicity for their celebrity marriage, Robin and Malik plan a belated wedding reception, but Tasha decides to boycott the party since she believes their marriage is a sham and won't support it. At the reception, Derwin and Melanie must face the reality of their complicated relationship after many people mistakenly congratulate Melanie on her pregnancy. Meanwhile, Rick reluctantly introduces Tasha to his overly protective mother (guest star Penny Marshall), causing fireworks to ensue between the two headstrong women.
Attempting to move forward with her life after splitting with Jason, Kelly decides to plan a fun evening out on the town with her high school girlfriends, but leaving her "Mrs. Jason Pitts" past behind her proves tougher than she ever imagined. Jason is also attempting to forget about his troubles with Kelly by going to one of Malik's infamous wild parties, but the next morning he has a whole lot more to regret than having one too many drinks.
When Melanie learns that she is on academic probation and that the grant money she needed to cover her tuition has been revoked, Derwin assures Melanie that he will help her with her finances. However, when Derwin's agent, Irv, informs him that his contract negotiations aren't going as well as they expected, Melanie feels like she has no other choice but to swallow her pride and ask her parents for the money. Meanwhile, Tasha and Malik are totally freaked out when it is accidentally revealed that Tasha's boyfriend, Rick, and Malik's wife, Robin, have a past together. Kelly goes on her first date since splitting up with Jason.
After her big argument with Derwin, Melanie decides to throw herself into her work at the hospital and meets her very own McHottie.
An insecure Tasha worries that her relationship with Rick has no future, so she decides it's time to start playing the field. Melanie struggles with her complicated romantic entanglements. Jason attempts to repair his relationship with his daughter, Brittany, who blames her father for her parents' pending divorce.
Derwin advises Jason to stop at nothing to win Kelly back and put an end to all the divorce talk, but Jason's grand gesture may be too little too late for Kelly. When Robin tells Malik to stop fooling around with other women in order to keep up the charade of their fake marriage, Malik decides it's time to play by his rules.
Jason loses his mind when he finds Kelly on a date with her new man, Joe, in the car that he gave to Kelly as a gift. Tasha is forced to face her insecurities about her relationship with Rick Fox. Melanie tries to find ways that she and Derwin can connect without physical intimacy.
Robin Givens gives an exclusive television interview to Extra's Tanika Ray, during which she insinuates that the real reason she and Malik are breaking up is because Malik is gay. After much teasing from his teammates about the false rumor, Malik discovers that one of the other players, Clay, is gay and hasn't told anybody on the team. Derwin tells Melanie that he knows she has been seeing a doctor at the hospital where she works.
Malik's invitation to appear on the children's television show of his childhood hero, Mookie, is rescinded after the Sabers decide his involvement in "outing" his teammate, Clay, is bad publicity for the organization. Jason enlists the help of Kelly and the Sunbeams to welcome Clay's boyfriend, Derek, into their football family.
With encouragement from Melanie and Kelly, Tasha realizes she's finally ready to introduce Malik to his father, Chauncey. Also, at the same time that Melanie decides to try and get back together with Derwin, Derwin and Janay rethink the status of their relationship as they are about to become first-time parents.
Tasha finds out that Rick's job is in jeopardy so she does everything in her power to prevent that from happening. Malik is obsessed with learning everything there is to know about his father (Boatman) and why they were apart all of these years. Melanie comes to the conclusion that the only reason Derwin is back together with Janay is to teach Melanie a lesson.
When the recently fired Tasha discovers that Kelly is still working at ISM she accuses her friend of betrayal. To get even with Kelly, Tasha introduces Jason to Camille, a beautiful talkshow host, and the two hit it off.
Janay's ex-boyfriend, Hill Harper, comes to town for a book tour, causing Derwin to become unexpectedly jealous of their relationship. Melanie finds herself mourning the loss of her relationship with Derwin, causing her to seek comfort in the arms of the cable guy (guest star Hardrict).
Malik meets his half-sister, Pucci, and sees an unmistakably familiar tattoo on her lower back, causing him to wonder whether they may have slept together before they knew they were related. Tasha meets her ex-husband Chauncey's wife, Sheila, and realizes that Chauncey married someone who could be Tasha's twin.
Tasha and Kelly throw an engagement party for Melanie and Derwin, but, unfortunately, the festivities doesn't run as smoothly as Melanie would have hoped. Jason brings Camille to the engagement party, forcing Kelly to come to terms with her ex's new relationship. Tasha feels awful knowing that she was the person who set Jason up with Camille and that she is keeping that secret from Kelly.
Jason decides he's ready to introduce his daughter, Brittany, to his new girlfriend, Camille, and Kelly reluctantly agrees. Melanie unintentionally finds the perfect wedding dress while shopping with Tasha, but hesitates about buying it.
After Janay has a false alarm with the baby's delivery, Melanie decides she wants to get married to Derwin right away before the baby arrives, even if it means giving up her dream wedding. When Jason is arrested for assaulting Kelly's boyfriend, Kelly rushes to be by Jason's side and the ex-couple have an emotional moment. Tasha finally admits to Kelly that she was the one who set Jason up with Camille and Kelly doesn't take the news well.
The third season concludes with Melanie trying to marry Derwin before Janay gives birth to Derwin's baby, even if it requires sacrificing her dream wedding.
