The Millers follows Nathan Miller, a recently divorced local roving news reporter looking forward to living the singles life until his parents' marital problems unexpectedly derail his plans. After Nathan finally breaks the news of his divorce to his parents Carol and Tom, his father is inspired to follow suit and stuns the family when he leaves his wife of 43 years. Already in shock, Nathan is even more aghast when his meddlesome mom decides to move in with him. Meanwhile, his absent-minded dad imposes upon Nathan's sister Debbie, her husband Adam and their daughter. Nathan's best friend and news cameraman Ray was excited to be Nathan's wingman in the dating scene, but Carol manages to even cramp his style. Now, as Nathan and his sister settle in with their truly impossible parents, they both wonder just how long the aggravating adjustment period is going to last.
Carol begins her search for a new apartment, causing Nathan and Debbie to race each other to find her a place that is the farthest away from each of them. During the course of her house-hunting, Carol meets and develops an instant bond with Kip Finkle, her new best friend.
Tom and Carol decide to formally end their marriage but are surprised when they both hesitate to finalize the divorce, sending Nathan and Debbie into a panic at the thought of their parents reconciling.
Nathan lands the biggest interview of his career with professional basketball player Metta World Peace, but when karma catches up with him, he risks ruining his professional reputation.
When Ray points out that Nathan has a history of being the worst wingman ever, Nathan embarks on a mission to be a better friend by becoming less self-involved. Also, Debbie and Adam disagree over what's best for their family's livelihood.
Nathan is assigned to cover a Sci-Fi Fest for his workplace and runs into a famous book author who has hated him since grade school. Meanwhile, Adam has an identity crisis when he learns that much of what he was taught on the commune was based on the mythology of Star Wars.
Kip encourages Carol to be more daring and confront her former work nemesis at the woman's retirement party
Nathan's series of reports on the pope's visit ends up being threatened.
The Millers decide to spend Thanksgiving apart for the first time, but their individual plans go awry.
The family attempt to help Aunt Louise after she decides she wants to accomplish something remarkable.
Kip wants the Millers to organize a living nativity scene. Carol wants Nathan and Kip to sort out the issues between them.
Nathan would like to to have a better relationship with his niece, Mikayla.
