In The Nanny, a cosmetics saleswoman stumbles upon the opportunity to become a nanny to the three rambunctious children of rich, widowed Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield. With her off-beat style of nurturing and straightforward honesty, she turns out to be the best thing that has ever happened to the family... whether they realize it or not.
Mr. Sheffield wants to buy himself some time before his relationship with Fran grows, so he asks Fran to redecorate the kitchen. Fran invites her cousin Sheila over to help her, and Sheila proposes a special aphrodisiac decoration to give Fran a little push in conquering Maxwell's heart.
Maxwell invites Fran to be his date at the very exclusive dinner party given by Elton John to celebrate Tantrums and Tiaras, the new film he and his partner, David Furnish, are premiering. Unfortunately, Fran's lurid past catches up with her when she appears in the film as the fam who prompted one of John's "Tantrums" by verbally abusing Elton.
When Maxwell's old partner Bobbi Flekman starts moving in on him, Fran's friends suggest that Maxwell only likes her because she looks like Fran.
After Chester is kidnapped while under Fran's care, she and Val try to find him and end up kidnapped themselves.
Fran and C.C. agree to let Dr. Joyce Brothers decide who's the better woman for Maxwell; Niles quits after he's denied a raise, a demand based on his faulty impression of Fran's salary.
Maxwell is jealous of Chevy Chase's attention to Fran, but he finds that she brings him luck for his poker game.
When a Cambodian woman that Fran and Val sponsored as a child visits New York and comes between the two friends, Fran fears she'll come between her and Maxwell too. To stay in the family Frans comes up with a plan to get engaged to Brighton.
With Yetta's wedding approaching Fran looks for a new job and gets an audition for a job on television.
Fran goes to Maggie's school to have a word with her Philosophy teacher and ends up developing a crush on him. After having to ask Maggie for her approval, Fran starts dating the gorgeous Jewish bachelor, which, of course, upsets Mr. Sheffield (who won't do anything regarding his true feelings towards Fran).
Fran takes Mr. Sheffield to the Fine Family Reunion at Niagara Falls to give both her and Niles the weekend off. Maxwell proposes and then hits his head.
Fran has a romantic date with Maxwell just as she breaks out and swells up due to an allergic reaction to her mother's squash pasta.
Fran has a run-in with actress Margo Lange, who is starring in one of Maxwell's plays, when she discovers that her famous mole is a fake.
Fran's father will not use the basketball tickets that come from Mr. Sheffield. Fran questions her relationships with men and Maxwell agrees to call her Fran.
Grace's pen pal, Billy, is the son of the Sultan of Koorestan, a country in the Middle East. Billy has invited Grace for a visit.
Maxwell is ready to propose to Fran and thanks to Niles everyone already knows it. At the big announcement dinner everyone is there except Maxwell.
Maxwell and Fran go shopping for engagement rings while Fran starts to feel that she isn't good enough for Maxwell's friends and lifestyle.
When Fran hires a gift wrapper instead of a singer rapper, she has to turn him into a singing sensation.
Fran goes to her high school reunion and finds all of her friends getting divorced while she is engaged.
Maxwell's father unexpectedly passes away, and in his will he leaves everything to Concepcion, a secret daughter he had with a flamenco dancer. C.C. is back from the sanatorium and doesn't miss the opportunity of terrifying Fran and trying to split Fran and Maxwell up.
Pressured by his family, Maxwell wants Fran to sign a pre-nup, which upsets her. She thinks he doesn't trust her and/or doesn't have faith their marriage will last forever. Unbelievably, Val is the one that opens her eyes to what's happening and how it is better for Fran to sign it.
Maxwell's brother and best man Nigel arrives to throw him a bachelor party. Fran is worried that he will tell Maxwell that they almost got married themselves.
Even though Maxwell's family tells Fran that their marriage won't work, Maxwell tells her how much he loves her and that their lives together will never be dull. That night they both fall off their honeymoon yacht.
Finally, after 5 long years, the wedding day has arrived. Fran spends her last night as a single woman at her mom's house, where Sylvia reads her a letter she wrote to Fran when Fran was born.
