How do young children make and break friendships and learn to share, stand up for themselves, and find their place in a new social group?
It's summertime and in a specially rigged school in North East London we welcome a new batch of 4 and 5 year olds from up and down the UK to the all-new Secret Life nursery. As each of the new children meet one another for the first time, we'll observe how they interact, play together – sometimes harmoniously, sometimes less so – and learn essential skills that they will continue to develop through to adulthood.
The second episode uncovers a fascinating world of playground friendships, romances and rivalries. Self-proclaimed geezer Harper already has several girlfriends, but has his eye on new girl Ava. How will confident Ava react to his overtures? Harper's best friend Vinnie also has romance on his mind, but what happens to their bromance when they come to blows over a girl? Rory has grown up on a Welsh farm and won awards for his pet rams. After a difficult and tearful start at the nursery, can he find a friend with whom to share his love of sheep?
This episode reveals how five-year-olds experiment with different identities, as part of their search to find out who they really are. Miylah calls herself a tomgirl and doesn't like playing with girly things, but what happens when her new friend Zaina offers to teach her about make-up? South Londoner Jack appears to be the archetypal lad. But is he just using this persona to camouflage his more sensitive side? And how far will he go to protect his tough-guy image?
This episode of the award-winning series reveals how five-year-olds learn to recognise and deal with risk. Talented maths fan Nathan can be easily scared and even finds playing 'goodies and baddies' traumatic. Can his fearless new friend Ralphy show him his brave side and how does Nathan react when he's given the opportunity to handle a tarantula? Daisy struggles when she meets some of the new arrivals at the nursery; can she take a risk on new friendships?
