Lady Audrey Forbes-Hamilton has fallen on hard times since the death of her husband, Martin. Forced to sell Grantleigh Manor, which has been in her family for 400 years, she graciously adjusts to her new circumstances in The Lodge at the edge of the estate. The Manor is now occupied by supermarket magnate Richard DeVere and his elderly mother. Audrey is annoyed that her position on the estate has been usurped by a man who represents everything Audrey regards as bad taste. It's clearly a love-hate relationship from the beginning, but between foiling DeVere's plans and bringing his ego down a notch or two, Audrey manages to stamp her authority on the running of the Manor while the faint whisper of romance echoes across the way.
When her inheritance is eaten up by her late husband's creditors, Audrey fforbes-Hamilton prepares to bid farewell to her beloved manor house, until a mysterious millionaire enters her life.
Audrey moves out of Grantleigh Manor. Her hopes of seeing the estate run along old lines are dashed when she discovers the new owner's background.
Audrey takes DeVere to task for failing to turn up in church on Sunday, but then fails to practise what she preaches.
DeVere moves his multinational grocery business to the manor and crosses swords with Audrey over a fireplace.
The summer ball for the local hunt is coming up, but with the change in ownership at Grantleigh, there's some confusion over who should arrange the event of the season.
Despite having come down in the world, Audrey feels appearances demand she take a holiday but dreads leaving her beloved Grantleigh Manor in DeVere's hands. So she picks the only safe week - when DeVere himself is on holiday.
When DeVere decides to film a commercial at the manor, Audrey thinks the world should know the truth about him - and about her.
