Celebrating the people and landscape of England's largest county, Yorkshire By the Sea follows the stories of everyday heroes and communities living and working in and around the spectacular Yorkshire coast.
The first episode features the Robson family from Bridlington, who've been fishing the North Sea for generations, as they head up the coast to Whitby for a boat repair. Volunteers at Bempton Cliffs work to protect and preserve almost half a million seabirds, and a group of sea swimmers take a full-moon sea swim at Scarborough.
Whitby distillers Jess and Luke are creating their latest tipple from tasty foraged seaside ingredients. In Scarborough, pioneering sea-farmer Wave checks out his seaweed harvest of sugar kelp, while newbie hoteliers Steph and Luke prepare for the busiest weekend of the summer season. Down the coast in Filey, military vehicle restorer Duncan preps his Second World War American Jeep for parade duty.
Fisherman Darren heads into the North Sea from Staithes in search of lobster and crab. Shellfish are now a mainstay of the catch on the Yorkshire coast, with conservationists ensuring that the lobster population remains buoyant by breeding and releasing them from a purpose-built hatchery in Whitby. Plus, a new recruit joins the team running the historic tramway in Saltburn, and an ambitious couple launch the first wine grown in their Robin Hood's Bay vineyard.
In Hornsea, new recruit Liam joins an independent lifeboat. Can he pass the gruelling tests that will enable him to save lives at sea? In Burton Constable, we discover the remains of an ocean giant washed up on the Holderness shoreline that appears in the literary classic Moby Dick. Glampsite owners Ed and Verity create a bespoke tent with glorious views of Whitby's gothic abbey.
