Plots centre on the domestic and professional lives of the residents of Carrigstown, a fictional suburb on the north side of Dublin. The area encompasses a restaurant, pub, garage, corner shop, community centre, charity shop, surgery and various businesses. Originally aired as one half-hour episode per week for a limited run, the show is now broadcast year round on RTE One in four episodes per week, all of which air at 20:00. Fair City is the most watched drama in Ireland, with regular viewing figures of between 500,000 and 600,000. Devised by Margaret Gleeson, it has remained a significant programme in terms of RTE's success and audience share, and also in the history of Irish television drama, tackling many controversial and taboo issues previously unseen on Irish television.
Niamh makes a decision about her future with Marcus, and Ciaran caves under the pressure of his double life. Meanwhile, Nikki sets her sights on Jake, who remains at odds with Ama.
The fallout from Paul and Niamh's conflict has disastrous consequences.
Ciaran lures Emmet into a harrowing game of cat and mouse as Katy's life hangs in the balance. A devastated Farrah is left without Ciaran's support as she struggles to cope with her loss. Niamh and Paul stumble across crucial information as their feud with Wayne and Orla escalates. Sash conceals her true feelings when she realises her relationship is at risk.
Rose provokes Caoimhe's ire by spurning Tommy's help with Katy's anniversary campaign. A fragile Farrah is smothered with love by her family, but will Heather takes things too far? Eoghan and Debbie worry about Emmet's mental state. While Emmet is pushed towards the edge as Katy's captor plays mind games with him.
Ciaran gets a sick pleasure out of forcing Emmet to carry out an appalling act that devastates the O'Brien family. Rose's forgetfulness piques Caoimhe's interest. Farrah warns her family to stay out of her life. An increasingly erratic Ciaran promises Katy that her captivity will end very soon.
Emmet is close to breakdown as Ciaran's demands get dangerous. Debbie and Eoghan fear for Emmet's mental health when he creates a major scene at the vigil for Katy. Caoimhe's concerns about Rose grow. Ciaran gives Emmet a life or death choice.
Emmet agrees to sacrifice himself. He is horrified at his discovery when he seeks help from Ciaran. Debbie and Eoghan fear the worst when Emmet disappears.
Debbie is in overdrive as she worries about Emmet. Farrah loses it with Heather when Ciaran drags up the past to keep Heather distracted. Meanwhile, Ciaran gives Emmet a terrifying ultimatum.
Emmet is forced to face the ugly truth of his past actions. Rose worries about her memory lapses but keeps it to herself, as Heather takes drastic action to stop Farrah going away with Ciaran.
Ciaran, stressed over Emmet and Katy, is now confronted with a suspicious Farrah and Debbie. As Rose, distracted with worry over Emmet, raises suspicions about her health. Meanwhile, a disorientated Katy tries to come to terms with her new surroundings. A shocking accusation by Heather threatens to bring Ciaran's world crashing down.
Ciaran, trying to buy time, is forced with a difficult decision. Hughie meanwhile begins to believe that Heather's accusations against Ciaran may be true. Damien reluctantly leaves Rose in charge of Saoirse, with worrying consequences. Farrah declares her love for Ciaran.
When Ciaran threatens Emmet's life, Katy is forced to take drastic action. Farah must face the awful truth about Ciaran while the O'Briens hope she can help reunite them with Katy. Damien lashes out when Rose's confusion puts little Saoirse at risk.
The O'Briens have their hopes dashed as it seems they are further than ever to getting Katy home. Farrah struggles to process Ciaran's betrayal but comes under suspicion as Ciaran's accomplice. Charlie and Cass help Damien make peace with Rose.
As Garda attention turns to Emmet, Farrah receives a disturbing phone call. Ciaran makes a devastating decision.
Suspicion turns on Farrah. Eoghan tries to hold the O'Brien family together as they wait for news from the Guards.
The investigation turns up some bad news for Farrah. There is trauma for the O'Briens as the details of Ciaran's murder plan hits home.
As the Garda investigation closes in, Farrah takes the initiative. But has she made everything worse?
Farrah, aided by Alannah, confronts the true horror of Ciaran's actions. Jake and Ama struggle to resolve their differences.
Despite her attempts to maintain a brave face, Farrah, overcome with guilt, finally breaks down. Jake is furious when he discovers Ama has been discussing their relationship behind his back. Is there still hope for them?
As Ellie freaks at the prospect of being interviewed by Gardai, journalists camp on Farrah's doorstep. An unexpected arrival causes tension between Kerri-Ann, Decco and Sash, Laura. Cracks begin to show in the recently patched up relationship of Jake and Ama. Meanwhile, war is declared as Jane and Nicola take sides in the Callum, Oisin feud.
As Farrah struggles to get on with her life, Kevin pushes for answers about Ellie and Heather. Kerri-Ann inadvertently causes trouble for Jake and Ama. Left holding the baby, will Decco finally find his parenting instincts? Meanwhile, the claws are out between Nicola and Jane.
Kevin forces Heather to unlock some deeply upsetting memories. Sash worries Nikki won't cope in a B&B with two small babies. Oisin's plot to get revenge on Callum backfires. Ama gives Jake some devastating news.
