Kim's Convenience is the funny, heartfelt story of The Kims, a Korean-Canadian family, running a convenience store in downtown Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Kim ('Appa' and 'Umma') immigrated to Toronto in the 80's to set up shop near Regent Park and had two kids, Jung and Janet who are now young adults. However, when Jung was 16, he and Appa had a major falling out involving a physical fight, stolen money and Jung leaving home. Father and son have been estranged since.Now, Appa and Umma run the store along with Janet who is studying photography at art school. Meanwhile Jung, who secretly stays in contact with Umma and Janet, is trying to turn his life around and recently landed a job at a car rental agency. The world of Kim's Convenience is real, colourful and urban - a diverse landscape of people and places and at the heart is the Kim family and their store. While the family continues to work and live, finding humour in the everyday tasks of running the store, they long for the day when the rift between Appa and Jung is mended and the family is whole once again.
In the series premiere, Mr. Kim decides to offer a store discount to gay customers. Meanwhile, Umma tries to find a hip Christian Korean boyfriend for Janet.
When Janet's photos start getting attention from admirers, Appa tries to prove he's a better photographer. Meanwhile, Jung decides to apply for a promotion at the car rental, to the dismay of Kimchee and Umma, though for different reasons.
Jung draws the wrong kind of attention from his boss when he gives Kimchee a Korean wedgie at work. Mr. Kim commissions Janet's friend Gerald to take his photo instead of asking Janet.
Mr. Kim is frustrated with Frank the repairman; Janet's cousin Nayoung visits from Korea, challenging Janet's sense of what it means to be ‘Korean.
Mr. Chin asks Mr. Kim to be his wingman; Janet asks Jung to fix a leaky pipe, but an intruder interrupts the repair.
Mr. Kim scolds Janet's professor's kid; Jung discovers Kimchee's method to make extra money.
Janet is taking a Hapkido class, but Mr. Kim questions her teacher's techniques; Jung runs into an old flame.
Mr. and Mrs. Kim's relationship is tested when Mr. Kim offers free stuff at the store to the attractive new female pastor. Janet dates Jung's friend Alex and Jung pretends to be cool with it.
Mr. Kim tries to prove to Janet that best before dates are meaningless. Mrs. Kim tries not to be embarrassed by her children at the church bazaar.
Janet is sick of working for free and looks for a new job, finding one at Handy Car Rental; Appa hires Gerald to work in the store.
Mr. Kim fixes a broken toilet for Kimchee; Jung hides out with Shannon; when Edwin drops by, Janet believes there's more to his relationship with Mrs. Kim.
Mr. Kim finds a lump on his back; Shannon brings Jung to a work event.
Before Janet can reveal her big news, she must survive the family singing festival at church; Mr. Kim gets attention for his new SUV.
