Originally, Joe Mannix worked for a large Los Angeles detective agency called Intertect, featuring the use of computers to help solve crimes. A regular guy, he rebelled against the Big Brother atmosphere at Intertect and struck out on his own, setting up his own agency.
Mannix launches a double-edged search for Brad Turner and Jimmy Whitewing, two friends of Peggy's, who are wrongly accused of murder, and for the real killer who can only be linked to the crime by a dancer. Brad and Jimmy seek refuge in Peggy's apartment, but flee when Mannix offers to help them under the condition they tell their story to the police.
Mannix's mentor is thrown to his death from a high-rise apartment, and the primary suspect asks Mannix to find a woman who can clear his name.
Joe's old flame Jean McBride asks Mannix to return to their hometown and clear her husband of a murder charge.
A studio exec hires Mannix to protect an obnoxious movie star who isn't taking murder attempts against him seriously.
An old friend from Mannix' college days asks him to clear the name of a doctor who lost his medical license... and who actively fights Mannix's efforts to clear him.
Three men claiming to be escaped convicts come after Mannix's new client, claiming that they want the money in a briefcase she has. But Mannix figures there's more going on.
Ellen Barton hires Mannix to determine that her husband's death in a scuba-diving accident was no accident.

Mannix hunts down a secretary who claims that her boss attempted to kill his estranged wife. The boss says that she misinterpreted what she saw, and the PI has to figure out the truth.
Mannix goes undercover as a sailor when a bank hires him to find a missing man.
An executive's wife hires Mannix to find out who is trying to kill her. The only clue: a locket with the word "Sylvia" written on it.
Someone hires three unrelated hitmen to take out Mannix. He survives the attempts and travels to Nevada to find the person responsible.
Mannix must decipher the fantasies of an emotionally-disturbed 9-year-old girl who witnesses the death of her doctor and the theft of $150,000 in bearer bonds.
