Originally, Joe Mannix worked for a large Los Angeles detective agency called Intertect, featuring the use of computers to help solve crimes. A regular guy, he rebelled against the Big Brother atmosphere at Intertect and struck out on his own, setting up his own agency.
A woman kills an intruder who she claims is blackmailing her, and hires Mannix to prove it.
While on vacation, Mannix befriends two young women. One turns up dead, but Mannix figures the other one was the intended target.
Mannix is jogging on the beach and sees two men attack a women at her home. The problem is that the crime Mannix describes happened a year ago.
Mannix returns to his hometown and finds himself embroiled in a murder case.

Lt. Larry Gifford hires Mannix to clear his name when he accidentally shoots and kills the man who killed Gifford's partner years before.
Crooks hire an imposter to pose as Mannix, who ends up kidnapped while the imposter takes his place.
During a car race, Mannix crashes due to hallucinations. He's taken to a private hospital where his condition worsens... and a nurse tells him that the doctor is drugging him.
